Grading Policy

Choir is a performance ensemble. The performance experience is an essential part of both the group and the individual choral experience. The following concert attendance policy is consistent throughout all choirs as PHS.

Concerts are required and any unexcused absence from performance result in the student’s grade dropping one full letter grade. For example, an A instantly becomes a B in just one night.

Family Emergency or Illness: Students will receive an “Excused” grade for the concert if the following criteria are met:

  • A written excuse must be presented to the teacher within two class periods after the student returns to school
  • The director must be contacted by the student to arrange a time to perform the concert music for the director within two weeks of the concert performance

Other Family Excuses: Students will receive an “Excused” grade for the concert if the following criteria are met:

  • A written excuse must be presented to the teacher at least one week prior to the concert
  • The director must be contacted by the student to arrange a time to perform the concert music for the director
  • Steps A and B must be completed within two weeks of the concert performance

Students in choir will earn grades in four different areas:

30%         Concerts: mandatory performances
30% Lessons: graded on attendance and preparedness
30% Effort/Daily Rehearsals: attitude, behavior, participation, readiness in class
10% Assignments/Tests: various assignments, journaling, test

Letter Grade Percentage of points:
